The Whole Earth Catalog was inspired by the question, “Why haven’t we seen a photograph of the whole earth yet?” The question had been induced by an acid trip, when founder Stewart Brand thought he could see the curve of the earth from a rooftop looking over his city.
Buckminster Fuller used to take his friends to cliffs overlooking the ocean at sunset, throw his hands up into the air, and tell them how to feel the earth spinning. “It’s the pressure you feel in your left foot,” he would say.
